Welcome to 2026! If you want to try something new, exciting, and a bit challenging this year, you’re in the right spot. Learning to snowboard is a great experience, and Big Bear Lake is the perfect place to start.
At Blauer Board Shop, we love seeing beginners get excited about snowboarding. We also know planning your first trip can feel overwhelming. What should you rent? Where do you go? Do you need a lesson?
Don’t worry, we’re here to help. This guide will walk you through everything you need for a fun and successful first day on the mountain.
Step 1: The Right Gear Makes All the Difference – Start at Blauer Board Shop
Before you even think about heading up the hill, you need the right tools for the job. As a beginner, buying a full setup doesn't make sense. Renting is the way to go, and it ensures you're on equipment perfectly suited for learning.
At Blauer Board Shop, we specialize in setting beginners up for success.
- The Beginner Snowboard Package: This is your bread and butter. Our beginner packages include a snowboard, boots, and bindings. Crucially, the boards we provide for learners are designed to be forgiving. They often feature a "rocker" profile, which raises the edges slightly off the snow. Translation? You’ll catch fewer edges and spend more time sliding and less time falling.
- More Than Just Hardgoods: Most first-timers don't have a closet full of technical snow apparel. No problem. We also rent waterproof jackets, snow pants, and helmets. Getting durable, waterproof outer layers is essential to staying dry, warm, and happy.
- Get Fitted by Pros: Our shop technicians will make sure your boots fit snugly and comfortably, and set your binding angles to a beginner-friendly stance.
- Save Time, Book Online: Don't waste precious mountain time standing in line. Book your rental package on our website in advance so your gear is ready and waiting when you arrive.
Step 2: Booking Your Lesson at Snow Summit or Bear Mountain
We cannot stress this enough: Take a lesson.
Could you try to teach yourself with YouTube videos and determination? Sure. Will you spend most of the day frustrated and on the ground? most likely. A professional instructor will teach you the fundamentals—how to strap in, how to stand up, how to stop, and how to turn—in a safe and structured progression. It is the fastest way to get to the fun part.
Big Bear Mountain Resort offers fantastic lesson programs at both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. Here are some top tips for booking:
- Choose Your Lesson Type: For most beginners, a Group Lesson is a fun and cost-effective way to learn the basics with others at your level. If you prefer one-on-one attention to progress faster, book a Private Lesson.
- The Crucial Booking Detail: This trips up many first-timers. When you book a lesson directly through the resort, it often does not include your lift ticket or rental gear. You need to coordinate all three.
-
Your Workflow:
- 1. Book your lesson on the Big Bear Mountain Resort website.
- 2. Book your rental package with us at Blauer Board Shop.
- 3. Purchase a beginner lift ticket from the resort for the day of your lesson.
- Book in Advance: Lesson spots, especially on weekends and holidays, fill up fast. Book weeks in advance if possible.
- Arrive Early: On the day of your lesson, give yourself plenty of extra time. You need to pick up your gear from our shop, get to the mountain, park, and find your lesson meeting spot. Aim to be at the resort base at least an hour before your lesson starts.
Step 3: Beginner Survival Tips & What to Wear
A successful first day is all about preparation and mindset.
What to Wear (The Layering System):
- Base Layer: Start with a thin, moisture-wicking layer against your skin. Think thermal top and bottoms made of synthetic material or merino wool. AVOID COTTON. Cotton absorbs sweat and will leave you freezing and miserable.
- Mid Layer: Add a fleece or sweater for insulation to keep heat in.
- Outer Layer: This is your shield. You need a waterproof and windproof jacket and snow pants.
- Socks: Wear one pair of thin, wool or synthetic ski/snowboard socks. Doubling up causes bunching and cold feet.
Essential Accessories:
- Helmet: This is non-negotiable. Protect your head. We rent them, so there's no excuse.
- Goggles: Even on cloudy days, the sun reflecting off the white snow is incredibly bright. Goggles protect your eyes from UV rays, wind, and snow.
- Waterproof Gloves or Mittens: Your hands will spend a lot of time in the snow. Wet gloves equal a bad time. Mittens are generally warmer.
- Wrist Guards: Highly recommended for beginner snowboarders. It's natural to put your hands out when you fall, and wrist guards offer crucial support.
Mindset Tip: You will fall. A lot. It is 100% part of the process. Don't get discouraged. Every time you get back up, you're getting stronger and learning something. Be patient with yourself, laugh it off, and celebrate the small victories, like your first successful stop or linked turn.
